Scitech’s Technology program empowers and inspires students in years 8-10 to embrace information and communication technology (ICT) in their learning. Students are encouraged to be creative in their exploration and expectations of new and future technology and gain an insight about the importance of techno-literacy in their lives and their future careers.
The program highlights the role and potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) in everyday life and explores the possibilities of ICT careers that exist now and those that are yet to be imagined. Teachers are provided with ongoing post visit resources including information on free software available for use in the classroom.
This program is suitable as an introduction to a topic, an extension, or to complement an existing classroom program. No prior experience or equipment is necessary.
A Technology visit can include a combination of three different programs:
Technology Show (30 minutes) - Due for release Term 3 2012
This interactive presentation showcases cutting edge information and communication technologies as a medium to highlight the importance and relevance of ICT in the lives and future careers of students.
Robotics Workshop (60 minutes/ 90 minutes/ 120 minutes)
Students use the Lego Mindstorms NXT robot education system to program robots to solve a problem requiring the use of four different sensors and complex movement. The workshop introduces students to the concept of programming as a use of language, the ubiquitous presence of programming in our lives, the commonality of robots and possible careers in IT and robotics. No prior experience in programming or robotics is necessary.
Making Media Workshop (60 minutes/90 minutes/ 120 minutes)
Digital media is overtaking traditional media such as analogue radio and TV. This session focuses on empowering students to use technologies available to them to understand and participate in their media environments. Students are shown how technology changes the way we communicate and how our behaviour shapes the development of new technology. In this workshop students create a stop-motion animation that communicates a relevant idea or concept and are encouraged to share their work online. Students will gain an appreciation for the use of new media in particular as a tool in education and communication, not just entertainment.
