Mechanical Contraptions

Test your skills in construction with a workshop that transforms your engineering ideas into reality.

You have reached the main content region of the page.

Automata are fascinating marvels that utilise a range of the mechanical processes found in modern machinery.

Designing and building automata requires a range of skills from art, engineering and maths.

Over 5 weeks, participants will design and create their own automaton from cardboard.

They will design mechanical linkages between different elements to create a hand-cranked cam system that brings life to an environment of their own choosing.

Through construction and decoration, participants will explore key design principles of form and function. Then take your contraption home to tinker and learn further.

The Scitech Lab provides a safe learning environment specialising in hands-on STEM workshops for children where they will:

  • Practice skills and explore new ideas
  • Build confidence and self esteem
  • Make like-minded friends
