Scitech takes science on the road in the Pilbara
Scitech will travel across the Pilbara, delivering hands-on science experiences to schools and communities.
Scitech is offering a series of five free virtual excursions for students in Years 3 to 6 during National Science Week 2026.
The Scitech team Joshua Guy, Lucas Black, Isaac Dawe, Zoe Burt, and Ryan Forsyth will take students on a journey to answer the question “Can plants feel things?”
Scitech is inviting primary school students across Australia to discover where curiosity can lead through a series of free virtual excursions during National Science Week (15 to 23 August).
Delivered by Scitech, Curiosity Unleashed will connect classrooms across the country with leading STEM experts, exciting science demonstrations, and interactive learning experiences designed to inspire the next generation of curious thinkers and problem-solvers.
Inspired by the 2026 National Science Week theme, Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All, each 20-minute session will start with a big question, such as “can humans fly?” or “can sharks stop swimming?” and take students on a journey of experiments, myth-busting and unexpected discoveries.
Scitech Primary STEM Coordinator Ryan Forsyth said the series was designed for students in Years 3 to 6 and would show that curiosity is the starting point for every scientific discovery.
“We want students to see that curiosity is something everyone has, and that science is a way of exploring the world around us,” Mr Forsyth said.
“Whether you’re wondering how lightning forms, why sharks need to keep swimming, or how traditional fire management works, asking those questions is the first step towards understanding our world.”
Each session features collaborations with leading organisations and experts, including astronaut and Australian of the Year Katherine Bennell-Pegg, Deadly Science, Perth City Farm, the Engineering Institute of Technology, AQWA and iFLY.
Teachers who register for the virtual excursions will also receive free extension resources to continue students’ learning beyond National Science Week.
One highlight of the series, Can You Fight Fire with Fire?, sees Scitech team up with Deadly Science and Mirliny to explore First Nations scientific knowledge through the chemistry and engineering of traditional tool making and the environmental science behind cultural fire management.
Deadly Science Founder and CEO Corey Tutt said First Nations knowledges are an essential part of Australia’s scientific story.
“By teaching First Nations knowledges we’re educating every child in this country, whether they’re born here or not, wherever they come from, that this is their history too,” Mr Tutt said.
“And if we can get that ownership, then we get this pride factor.”
Mr Tutt said First Nations representation in science was key to making STEM feel accessible.
“If you go to a classroom of kids and you ask them what a scientist looks like, the majority of the time they’re going to describe Albert Einstein in a lab coat,” Mr Tutt said.
“If you want to show a child what a scientist looks like, you’re probably better off holding a mirror.
“As science communicators and as science organisations, we’ve got to remove that barrier for young people.
“So, part of doing that is making science relatable – you can’t be what you can’t see.”

Deadly Science Founder and CEO Corey Tutt, Scitech Programs Coordinator Scitech Eleanor Cork, Scitech Science Communicator Eliana Trenerry, Deadly Science Director of First Nations & Community Engagement Vince Scott, and Scitech Primary STEM Coordinator Ryan Forsyth.
Last year, Scitech’s national program of virtual excursions during National Science Week attracted more than 53,000 student views and engaged more than 3,000 teachers in professional development.
The virtual excursion sessions will be streamed on YouTube and launched each day from:
Monday 17 August | Featuring Perth City Farm
Tuesday 18 August | Featuring Deadly Science and Mirliny
Wednesday 19 August | Featuring Engineering Institute of Technology
Thursday 20 August | Featuring AQWA
Friday 21 August | Featuring iFLY
