Following an established career in science with a doctorate in Chemistry, along with extensive experience in operations, technical and strategic management, Dr John Chappell will take up the role of Scitech Chief Executive Officer on 28 February 2022.
Scitech Board Chair, Chris Palandri said the leadership that Dr Chappell would bring to the organisation was the right balance to strengthen Scitech as an organisation, and its mission to drive awareness and engagement in science, maths, engineering and technology.
“After a comprehensive recruitment process, we are so pleased to announce Dr Chappell’s appointment.“ Mr Palandri said.
“John is not only passionate about science from his chemistry background, he also has an established track record in business and management roles. We believe that John’s experience, values and strong leadership abilities made him an ideal fit for Scitech’s future growth and sustainability in delivering STEM engagement in the Western Australian community.”
Dr Chappell said he was excited to take up the new role following his most recent position as Chief Operating Officer at one of the world’s leading marine research organisations, the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).

As a research chemist, the first part of Dr Chappell’s career was in the resources sector at Alcoa and then BHP Billiton in the early 2000’s. While at BHP Billiton, he transitioned quickly into senior positions due to his leadership abilities, before taking up at senior role in 2011 with AIMS. Dr Chappell became AIMS Chief Operating Officer in 2018 and during his time has been responsible for securing new funding, improving organisational safety, developing crucial stakeholder relationships within Government and corporate sectors and delivering organisational and financial success.
Dr John Chappell succeeds interim Chief Executive Officer Sam Kronja who has led Scitech since Kalien Selby stepped down in June 2021.
The Scitech Board wish to acknowledge the outstanding work, support and guidance he has provided Scitech in the past few months. Mr Kronja will continue in the position until late February when Dr Chappell commences.
