Challenge Days, Scitech Discovery Centre’s highly anticipated annual event, brought together gifted and talented upper primary school students from 35 schools across Western Australia to collaborate, innovate, and solve real-world space challenges. This year’s theme, ‘Space Race’, inspired students to apply their STEM skills to tasks such as calculating optimal routes for the Curiosity Rover, balancing cargo loads on a space shuttle, and analysing space rock samples.
The event featured participants from the North and South Metro PEAC programs, Catholic Education, and public schools, working in teams to apply creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork to overcome complex, space-themed challenges. The day culminated with students presenting their innovative designs and solutions to their peers and a panel of expert judges, showcasing their problem-solving abilities in action.
Inette Henn, Scitech’s Manager of Learning Futures, shared her thoughts on the program: “At Scitech, we are passionate about providing opportunities for all West Australians to actively participate in STEM and explore how it impacts our daily lives. Challenge Days gives students from across the state a chance to come together, have fun, and flex their STEM knowledge in a dynamic environment. It’s amazing to watch these young people thrive in a challenging, competitive setting, and it’s truly inspiring to see how resilient and collaborative they are. Events like this really fill us with pride and excitement for the future generation of WA STEM professionals!”
One of this year’s winning teams came from Peter Carnley Anglican Community School, whose coordinator, Mrs. Hollie Dunn, praised the event, calling it an “innovative, inspiring, and engaging experience that encourages today’s students to consider their future options.”
Other Challenge Days winners included John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School, St John Bosco College and South West PEAC.
Challenge Days continues to spark curiosity and creativity in the next generation of thinkers and innovators, providing an invaluable platform for students to develop critical skills essential for their future success in STEM.
