Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program
Maths doesn’t come easy to everybody, but there are ways to learn to love it.
Since 2012, Scitech has been working in partnership with Alcoa to support primary school teachers to improve their confidence and ability to facilitate deeper learning of mathematical concepts. Not only does the Maths Enrichment Program have positive outcomes for teachers, it also helps to boost student performance.
The program is free and is delivered to schools in WA’s south-west, Peel and Perth metro areas.
Guided by the latest research on effective maths teaching techniques, the program also draws information from leading maths experts from various universities and institutions worldwide.
Using a combination of techniques, from targeted short-term intervention to in-depth coaching and mentoring, the Maths Enrichment Program supports an easier transition from basic numeracy to more complicated concepts.
After taking part in the program, 100% of teachers agreed (20% strongly agreed) that their confidence to teach mathematically focused projects had increased and 100% of teachers agreed (80% strongly agreed) that students in their class were engaged and enjoyed the program.
Alcoa Champions of Maths Blog
Champions of Maths is a component of the Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program.
It is a year-long intensive coaching program that develops primary school teachers as maths specialists and community leaders in maths education. The posts on this blog will cover several areas of interest, including current research that informs the program and strategies and activities being used in the classroom.
Ongoing updates will share the journey of the teachers as they progress towards becoming Champions of Maths.
