Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program
Maths doesn’t come easy to everybody, but there are ways to learn to love it.
Since 2012, Scitech has been working in partnership with Alcoa to help primary schools support teacher confidence and leadership with mathematics. Not only does the maths enrichment program have positive outcomes for teachers, it also helps to boost student performance.
The maths enrichment program is free, runs for a year and can be delivered to schools in WA’s south-west, Peel and Perth metro areas.
Guided by the latest research on effective maths teaching techniques, the program also draws information from leading maths experts from various universities and institutions worldwide.
By promoting a three-way learning relationship between teachers, students and parents, the transition from basic numeracy to more complicated concepts becomes easier.
And after taking part in the program, students reported a 28% increase in their interest in maths, and close to a 20% increase in confidence and enjoyment during maths lessons. Numbers we can all enjoy.
Champions of Maths is a component of the Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program, delivered in partnership by Scitech and Alcoa of Australia.
It is a year-long coaching program that develops primary school teachers as maths specialists and community leaders in maths education. The posts on this blog will cover several areas of interest, including current research that informs the program, strategies and activities being used in the classroom, and ways teachers have transformed parents’ attitudes towards maths and maths learning. Ongoing updates will share the journey of the teachers as they progress towards becoming Champions of Maths.
