A new interactive recycling truck exhibit is giving visitors a fun, hands-on way to learn how to sort waste correctly.
Which waste goes where? Scitech visitors can put their knowledge to the test with the new Recycling Truck exhibit, part of the Here, There and Everywhere gallery.
Here, There and Everywhere includes 17 new exhibits that showcase how science and technology are solving challenges in our everyday lives.
The Recycling Truck exhibit encourages visitors to identify different types of waste and place them in the correct slots of the truck to get the green light.
Created in partnership with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER), acting for the Waste Authority, the exhibit is both fun and educational, giving children and adults alike the chance to become a ‘GREAT Sort.’
WA Waste Authority Chair Elizabeth Carr AM said the Waste Authority was proud to be part of Scitech’s biggest exhibition refresh in its 37-year history.
“As part of the Here, There and Everywhere exhibit, the new interactive waste sorting truck gives visitors of all ages a fun, hands-on way to learn how to sort waste correctly using the three-bin food organics and garden organics (FOGO) system,” Ms Carr said.
“It provides a link between waste sorting messaging at home with the same messaging when out and about.
“This engaging exhibit supports Western Australia’s Waste Strategy by making waste education consistent and accessible.
“It’s especially popular with school age children and helps spread the WasteSorted and GREAT Sorts messages in the community.
“Together, we’re inspiring a new generation of GREAT Sorts who do better than the bin.”
The unique exhibit was designed and built onsite at the Scitech Discovery Centre with engineering, software and electrical consultancy support from Aurecon.
Scitech Chief Executive Officer Dr John Chappell said the Recycling Truck exhibit was already very popular with Scitech visitors of all ages.
“Here, There and Everywhere aims to highlight the relevance of science and technology to our everyday lives, and the Recycling Truck is a fantastic way to make that connection,” Dr Chappell said.
“We’re excited to showcase the endless possibilities of STEM and encourage engagement in science through play and discovery.”
Scitech also provides Containers for Change collection points throughout the Discovery Centre and offices with signage to encourage recycling habits for both staff and visitors.
Funds raised by the Containers for Change scheme contribute to Scitech’s School Access Program, providing select primary schools with free entry to a Scitech excursion and support towards bus transportation.
