Throughout the year, we hold engaging workshops in our CSIRO Lab for young scientists.

Scitech CSIRO Lab Workshops cater for children aged 4 to 16 years old, with a variety of workshop topics on offer to ensure there's something for everyone.

All workshops have 20 spots and are held in the CSIRO Lab unless stated otherwise.

• Scitech strives to provide opportunities for girls and young women that cater to their interests and enable them to socialise with other like-minded peers. Most of our STEM workshops are available to girls and boys to work together and share their passion for STEM.

This year we have added a range of girls-only sessions, as research shows that some girls and young women become more engaged with science, technology and mathematics when single-gender classes are offered.

Space radiation engineers 9 Jan

Learn about the dangers of radiation encountered by space explorers. Analyse different materials to simulate space radiation shielding on a spacecraft and use your engineering skills to select the best material to design a spacecraft.

Flying physics - Centre of gravity 13 Jan

Determining the centre of gravity is very important for engineers and designers of rockets and aircrafts. Find out why this is so important and how to locate the centre of gravity of a number of objects and make a centre of gravity space craft toy to take home.

Operation Planet Survival 16 Jan

Your space crew has crash landed on an unknown planet. Your limited water supply has been contaminated with toxic space dust. Sci-fi soundtrack 23 / 24 Jan

Using littleBits Korg synthesizer kits, explore the science of sound, make sweet Sci-fi beats and create instrument sounds. Using Audacity multi-track audio editor and recorder you will learn how to record and edit a Sci-fi sound track to take home in a digital sound format.

Beginner robotics – Mars rover challenge

Your space crew has crash landed on an unknown planet. Your limited water supply has been contaminated with toxic space dust. Your mission is to invent a water filter using the limited equipment on board. Learn about the process of filtration and invent your own water filter to take on your next adventurous journey.

Intermediate robotics (Python) 18 Jan

Using an Edison™ robot and EdPy software you will learn how to program your Edison™ in the Python programming language. Using this knowledge in programming you will complete a Mars rover challenge. You must have completed a beginner robotics workshop with Edison previously to book.

Kinetic ball machines - Saturdays Term 1

In this 8 week hands-on workshop series, you will have a go on a real pin ball machine and assemble a pinball machine from a kit to take home. We will get to grips with the physics principles of gravity, forces and acceleration. Using engineering principals and your new found skills and knowledge you will invent, innovate, design and build your own kinetic ball machine. Participants receive a participation certificate, and earn skills and reward badges.
