CSIRO Lab Workshops

Throughout the year, we hold engaging workshops in our CSIRO Lab for young scientists.

Scitech CSIRO Lab Workshops cater for children aged 4 to 16 years old, with a variety of workshop topics on offer to ensure there's something for everyone. 

Bookings for 2017 workshops open 28 November.

Super absorbing science

Be absorbed in a workshop all about how plants grow. Experiment with super-absorbent crystals, paper water lilies and rainbow carnations. Use your discoveries to help care for your own seedling.

The science of sounds

Our sound science educators will guide you in exploring how sounds are created. Experiment with equipment to find out how sounds are made and how you can see and feel sound vibrations. Have a go on some unusual homemade musical instruments and make an acoustic instrument to take home.

littleBits® electronic music

You will learn about acoustics, the science of sound and the history of electronic music. Using littleBits® electronics KORG synthesizer kits, you will explore signal generators (oscillators and randomisers), controllers (keyboard and sequencer), modulators (envelopes and filters), and modifiers (delays and mix). Each participant will be supplied with a littleBits® synthesizer kit and headphones for use in the session.

Sewable electronics 

Throughout this workshop you will get the opportunity to make your own art designs using LED lights. Learn all about circuit design and how to incorporate sensors within that circuit.

Summer School Robotics

In this three day series you will learn about the amazing world of robotics. Get a look at some of the hardware behind robotics and explore how various sensors help a robot operate. Use coding to programme robots to complete tasks and to create your own robot art to take home.

Out and About - The Science of Recycling

What do Lego®, recycling and Scitech have in common?

Start the year 2017 by setting a new record as we attempt to build 30 motorised Lego® rubbish trucks in one day! Join E2 Young Engineers® - Perth South Metro and Scitech at the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) Regional Resource Recovery Centre to be part of the action.

• Learn about the science & future of recycling.
• Build a motorised Lego® rubbish truck.
• See how a real recycling plant works.

Out and About – Perth Observatory

Monday 16 January | 8.30pm

Family friendly event, all attendees must book (8+)

Adult (16+): $40 | Child (8-16): $25

Experience the amazing night sky through a range of telescopes as you are taken on a grand tour of the Southern Hemisphere’s sky to look at Nebulas, planets, dying stars, and enormous star clusters. You will also be able to browse the museum and see historical instruments, a meteorite exhibit, astrophotography and artwork.

• Please wear closed in shoes and bring a light jumper as it can get cold at night.
• Please allow travel sufficient travel time as the session will start at 8:30pm.

Make a night out of it by coming early and using the BBQs and picnic facilities (from 6:30pm).

Science night 

Thursday 12 January | 5.30-8.30pm | Ages 6-16 years

Escape the heat into the cool of Scitech once the sun goes down. Science Night is back these holidays with an exclusive after-hours event just for kids. Explore Scitech’s awesome Bionic Me exhibition, see a show in the Lotterywest Science Theatre, experiment in the CSIRO Lab and complete a science scavenger hunt.

Pizza and drinks will be provided for booked attendees.

Multi-week STEM workshop series in 2017

We are pleased to announce the introduction of term based multi-week STEM workshop series in the CSIRO Lab in 2017.

Your child will have the opportunity to:
• practice skills and explore their own ideas,
• build their self-esteem,
• earn badges and rewards, and
• make new friends with other like-minded children

Saturday workshop series

10.00am-11.30am | 6-9 year olds
1.00pm-2.30pm | 8-12 year olds

Cost = $150 per term (includes all materials and supplies), 20 children per series
Participants will receive have their own lab coat and safety glasses to take home.

Term 1 –Technology and electronics – Frankentoy

Gain the skills that a maker needs to create a new device. Learn about circuits with littleBits electronics kits, then create circuits using wires and electronic components, make a battery using a renewable energy source, find out how electronic toys work and circuit bend them to make strange noises in the demolition toy derby, and use your new skills to invent and create your own Frankentoy to take home.

Term 2 – Biology – Gross scary science

Learn about living things from weird simple one celled organisms to more complex creepy plants and animals. Look up close at the strange mythical microscopic living things, dissect animal parts, meet some slimy worms and scary snakes, eat freaky looking insects (if you dare) and feed primal flesh eating plants. You will then design a habitat to house some creepy living things to take home as pets.

Tuesday after school workshop series


Term 1 or Term 2 - Robotics

4.00pm – 5.00pm | 8-12 year olds

Cost = $150 per term (includes all materials and supplies), 20 children per series
Participants will receive a Robotics badge and build a programmable robot to take home.

Build your own robot, learn how sensors work and how to program a robot to respond to the environment, learn the basics of coding and find out about a range of robotics resources that can help prepare you for an exciting future career in digital technology.
