Scitech have partnered with Woodside to deliver Science After School STEM Club, a program that provides opportunities for science learning beyond the classroom in schools across metropolitan Perth. STEM Club provides opportunities to practice and enhance knowledge and skills, whilst increasing awareness of the relevance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to our everyday lives.
STEM Club is delivered over 16 weeks which allows time for in depth exploration of various STEM topics, the application of STEM principles in multiple ways and project-based learning. We invite the parents/guardians of students to participate throughout the program as much as possible as it will foster science at home and a deeper engagement with their child’s learning.
Each program is suitable for years 4-6 with a maximum of 20 students per session. Each weekly session runs for 60 minutes and includes take-home elements. Schools have the option between two programs;
Robotics.
Opportunities beyond the classroom.
Engineering challenge.
Available workshops
Tinker and Create
Students will develop their science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in a range of hands-on tinkering workshops. From learning about and building simple machines to designing gliders and wearable technology there is something for every student in this engaging and challenging program.
| Weeks 1-4 | Simple Machines | Learn about simple machines and design and construct your own automaton to take home |
| Weeks 5-8 | Take to the Skies | Learn about the science of flight as you design and build a glider and put it to the test |
| Weeks 9-12 | Electrifying Circuits | From simple circuits in toys to wearable technology students will learn all about electrical energy and design electrifying projects |
| Weeks 13-16 | Marble Run | Put all of your new found skills to the test and help build a massive Rube Goldberg machine |
Cost: $200 and includes the resources and materials needed to build their projects as well as being able to take home what they have made.
Robotics and Technology
Explore the fascinating world of robotics and computer programming using Edison™ robots and Hummingbird robotics kits. Students will learn about sensors, coding with Scratch, technology and its relevance to their lives as they program, engineer, build and even create art using robots.
| Weeks 1-4 | Introduction to Edison Robotics | Discover the difference between robots and machines and use barcode programs and LEGO™ |
| Weeks 5-8 | Edison Robotics and coding | Through computer programming, robots will follow a line, play music and create art |
| Weeks 9-12 | Coding Animatronics | An introduction into animatronics with circuit building and programming of LED lights, motors and sensors |
| Weeks 13-16 | Engineering Animatronics | Students combine the skills learnt and construct their own Animatronic robot and showcase their work |
Cost: $200 and includes the resources and materials needed to build their projects as well as an Edison robot to take home.
